Conclusion.
PMQ revitalization project is a good attempt to reinterpret the use of heritage. It is a project that could be beneficial to the Hong Kong society . Although it is not history-oriented (not really as a heritage site), it is still some kind of related to history (with the exhibition rooms and so). Yet, we think the PMQ needs to care more about the local communities and culture in the future for improvement.
At the same time, the purpose behind this project is ambiguous because the project stressed on both the provision of open space and heritage tourism. The open space suggests a public ownership by which every person can enjoy the place, but heritage tourism implies a private management that excludes others from using the heritage for their own uses. So we think the two aspects are somehow contradicting with each other.
And we feel a big question behind the PMQ revitalization --- what is valued and emphasized in the process? Is heritage conservation being the important one, or is it only concerning the economic development?
